2006 Open Day

Guildford Heritage Open Day

At the Spike

Saturday September 9th

&

Sunday September 10th

Even though building works were in full swing CJT insisted that the public were given access to the Spike on these very important days and it was worth it as more than 360 visitors came to see the building.

The Charlotteville Jubilee Trust is in the process of refurbishing the Spike and it is soon to become an Heritage and Community Centre serving the community and the public.

The £1.6M project has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Guildford Borough Council, SITA Trust and Surrey County Council

Imagine it is 1906. The large wooden gate in Union Lane. with the gas light flickering above, opens for the first time to welcome the casual workers and vagrants who often tramped for the entire day for a piece of cheese, a dry slab of bread and a night of cold comfort.  To earn their keep, they might have to chop wood, pick oakum or break stones.  The Guildford Spike is unique as it retains its stone breaking grills.

Setting up waiting for the visitors - teas and coffees at the ready

Calm before the storm.  The weather was so good over the entire weekend and the large turnout of visitors meant that, at times, we had to run three tours simultaneously.

All ages came to see the Spike

Waiting to get in on a lovely sunny day

I really meant - "All ages!"

I wonder if he'll come back when he's a little older?
