The main contract for the Spike's refurbishment is now
complete and the community have a Community and Heritage Centre to be proud
of. From start to finish the project took almost six years and here we
present some of the photographs that were taken around the completion period
in July 2008.
One of the biggest
changes to the Spike that affected its appearance both inside and out were
the replacement lantern lights. We had these five large structures
manufactured to reflect the dimensions of the originals. These however
were made from epoxy powder coated aluminium rather than the timber
structures that were originally on the building.
The large entrance
gate has been returned and an appropriate gate light hung over
The outside waiting
room (LHS) was refurbished using almost total volunteer labour
The Entrance door to the east
wing has been repaired
The east wing
corridor was thoroughly cleaned but its history remains in the unpainted
walls
The cells are
pretty much as we found them however they have been decorated in there
original Edwardian colour scheme
The original cell
doors were also retained unaltered
Stone-breaking
grills preserved and protected by a new corrugated steel canopy
This was full of
weeds the size of small trees when we took the building on
West wing community
centre corridor, decorated and carpeted and regularly booked
