“On the Toby”

A Sponsored Tramp from Dorking to Guildford
18th May 2008

Start: Dorking Hospital, car park by Asquith Nursery, 1000.

 Summary of Route:

The route skirts south of Dorking town centre then heads west along the Greensand Way until it meets a Link path that heads north, up the scarp slope of the downs, to join the North Downs Way at Ranmore Common.
It then follows the North Downs Way to Newlands Corner.
Just beyond Newlands Corner it leaves the North Downs Way, cuts north and skirts the south
side of the golf course and Merrow Downs before heading down Warren Road to the Spike.

1.     From the front of the former Dorking Workhouse proceed down the path to the Horsham Road.

2.     Turn LEFT along Horsham Road.

 

 

3.     CROSS Horsham Road at first opportunity, when safe.

 

 

4.     After approx 50m turn RIGHT into Harrow Road West.
[sign: “The Nower”]

 

 

5.     At the end of Harrow Road West CROSS the road, when safe, into The Nower and Milton Heath.

6.     Follow path straight ahead towards woods.

 

 

7.     Follow path through woods for approx 300m, heading in a westerly direction, keeping to the foot of the slope on the left hand side.

 

 

8.     Follow the signposts across the heath for about 200m.

 

 

9.     By the three large, gnarled sweet chestnut trees, follow the arrow LEFT.

 

 

10.  At the metalled road, turn LEFT.
[NOTE: there are many paths across the heath. It is not too critical which route you take as long as, when you reach the road, you turn left along it.]

11.  Proceed along the road for about 250m, following the Greensand Way (“GW”) signs.

 

 

12.  At the cottage with the gatehouse, bear RIGHT off the road.

13.  A few paces on, at the five bar gate, bear RIGHT again.

[ignore the tempting path down the gulley to the left.]

 

 

14.  Follow the footpath downhill, between two fences, to the road.

 

 

15.  At the road turn RIGHT.

16.  Walk north along the road approx 300m to the main A25 road.

 

 

17.  CROSS the A25 when safe.

 

 

18.  Carry on north along track approx 200m until you come to a house.
[sign “Linge Lane”]

 

 

19.  At the house, bear RIGHT behind laurel hedge and proceed past child’s swing, across foot bridge and then over a stile.

 

 

20.  Follow path north towards the North Downs, over another stile, across open fields toward a wood.
[ignore the track with signpost “public footpath” that crosses the path] 

 

 

21.  Follow the path into the wood.

22.  On the other side of the wood, climb over the stile then turn LEFT along track.

 

 

23.  After approx 250m there is a railway crossing; CROSS when safe.

 

 

24.  Continue to walk up the footpath, which bears right into a wood.
[main ascent on the walk coming up!]

 

 

25.   After a steep climb turn sharp LEFT along track, continuing through wood.

26.  Follow track through the wood for approx 600m then turn RIGHT on a footpath up the hill.
[path is opposite a signpost on the left at the top of some steps down the hill.]
[path is also about 100m before the edge of the wood which is marked by a boundary fence]

27.  Follow path about 100m up the hill to a kissing gate.

 

 

28.  Go through the kissing gate and follow the path across the field straight up the hill.
[sign “National Trust, Steer’s Field”]

 

 

29.  At the crest of the hill, by the corner of a fence on the right, turn LEFT along path towards a gate into a wood.
[this is the North Downs Way]

30.   You will now follow the North Downs Way to Newlands Corner.

 

 

31.  At the White Downs noticeboard bear LEFT.

32.  After 200m, go through a gate by a pillbox, then bear RIGHT.

33.  At the next road, cross when safe, bear RIGHT onto the footpath.

34.  On Netley Heath, approx 400m after crossing a bridle path running north-south at Gravelhill Gate, follow the North Downs Way as it bears LEFT from the track you are on.

35.   At Holister Farm, follow the “North Downs Way” signs through the farmyard then turn RIGHT up track.

36.  After 200m, when track bears left by a field with caravans, carry STRAIGHT ON.

 

 

37.   At the next road, a further 200m on, CROSS when safe then bear RIGHT along road a few paces then turn LEFT along footpath beside an empty concrete pond.

38.  After 150m CROSS road, when safe, and proceed across West Hanger car park to footpath.

39.  At Newlands Corner, CROSS the main A25 road with care.

40.  Proceed through the car park and along the bridle way.

41.  Follow path STRAIGHT ON into woods.

42.  After ~1km, where path is wide and muddy, turn RIGHT onto footpath.

43.  From the fingerpost proceed 43 double paces (count them!) and turn LEFT along narrow footpath.

 

 

44.  Follow the path down hill through a grove of ancient yew tress and pollarded oaks, then onto the course of a (hopefully) dried-up stream, until you reach a track.

 

 

45.  Turn LEFT onto the track.

46.  About 150m beyond the pink house turn LEFT onto footpath into wood.

47.  Follow the path through the woods, past the 18th tee on the golf course.

 

 

48.  At fork in the path just beyond the 17th green bear LEFT.

 

 

49.  At the edge of Merrow Downs bear LEFT and follow the footpath along the top of the slope.
