Below is the current list of items we need to source for the heritage interpretation boxes at the Spike.  Once we have the items (or they are on order) they are shown in blue, however if you think you also have examples please let us know.  The Period is circa 1906.

Cell 1 – Sarah the single mother

 

Item 1.1 – Workhouse death notice of husband

Item 1.2 - Childs shoe or blanket

Item 1.3 - Letter from relatives offering her somewhere to stay – this needs to be written by me or a creative minded volunteer

Item 1.4 - Period map showing intended journey (to be travelling northwards with casual wards and potential lodging houses marked along the way) – I am waiting to hear back from SHC to see if they have a Victorian map of Britain we can have a scan of

Item 1.5 - Photo of ‘Girls doing laundry work’ (Image ref. 1533, reproduced by permission of The Children’s Society) – I have this already, Sarah will reproduce this

Item 1.6 - Image of Lodging House in Spitalfields, 1900 (Peter Higginbotham, www.workhouses.org.uk) – I have this already, Sarah will reproduce this

Item 1.7 -  Polishing cloth, old floor wax, or stiff brush (to denote her odd job as a charwoman)

Item 1.8 - Period coins (enough to suggest she could pay for her stay at the casual ward)

 

Cell 2 – Tom the Soldier

Item 2.1 - Boer War service medal – reference www.casus-belli.co.uk, we might have to have this specially made

Item 2.2 - Discharge papers from the army – can’t find reference for what this would look like without going to the National Archives

Item 2.3 - Papers relating to soldiers pension – ditto

Item 2.4 - Tobacco and a pipe – need to find these

Item 2.5 - A snuff box – need to find this
