I would use the Spike for:

- mothers and toddlers mornings

- holding a party (children or adults)

- a visit to the heritage centre

- a coffee break while the children are playing in the playground

- the private day nursery facility

- holding or attending clubs (bridge, fitness, table tennis etc.)

- educational classes, U3A, art and pottery etc.

- one of the CJTs regular social events

- twice weekly youth and games club

- the restoration project and heritage dig

- become a member (£15 pa) and benefit from usage discounts

- it is unlikely I will ever use the Spike or visit the heritage centre

A. Spikes obtained their name from the tool, a spike, that was used for picking oakum a common 'task' that was performed by vagrants to help pay for their keep.  The Oxford Dictionary of English has the informal of the word Spike as "A hostel ward offering informal accommodation for the homeless"
