The original Bright hill, leading from Sydenham Road up to Harvey Road, was extremely steep. In creating the car park in the late 60s the engineers joined Bright Hill with Hill Place – a cul de sac with which it ran parallel – forming a gentler slope. Some 80 small dwellings were demolished in the process. The retaining wall of the end of Hill Place can be seen – about halfway up Bright Hill. At the bottom were some shops – a newsagent, butcher, fish and chips, a grocer and Mr J. Klein – a Jewish Tailor.
